Kansas City, Missouri · minutes west of Grandview

South KC is where
the city comes to eat.

Grandview's western edge blends straight into south Kansas City — not a separate city, but a run of neighborhoods that Kansas Citians know first and foremost as a place to eat very, very well.

Martin City

A steak-and-smoke landmark

If south KC has a capital, it's Martin City — a small district with an outsized reputation for food. Jess & Jim's Steakhouse has been searing steaks here since 1938 and earned a national name (thanks in part to writer Calvin Trillin) as one of the country's great steakhouses. Barbecue runs just as deep: the original Fiorella's Jack Stack Barbecue got its start in Martin City in the 1970s, and the neighborhood has been a KC food pilgrimage ever since. Come hungry; leave loosening your belt.

The neighborhoods

Red Bridge and the rest

Away from the restaurants, south Kansas City settles into established residential pockets. Red Bridge is the best-known — a leafy, mid-century neighborhood with its own shopping center and easy access to the parkland and trails along the Blue River. It's the quieter counterweight to Martin City's dinner crowds: mature trees, familiar streets, and a short drive to just about everything on this side of the metro.

The Grandview line

The barber next door

Because Martin City and Grandview practically share a property line, the two run together in daily life — a five-minute drive separates a plate of Martin City ribs from a chair at The Stache in Grandview. For a lot of south KC regulars, it's the closest real barbershop going, close enough that "worth the drive" barely applies. More on eating around Grandview.
