History of Grandview, MO

Grandview, Missouri traces its origins to a rural farming community that began developing in the mid-1800s. The community grew slowly at first, with the 1889 establishment of a post office being an important development.

Grandview was finally incorporated as a city on February 6, 1912. The population was just 410 residents.

“Isn’t it a grand view?”

The city derives its name from the beautiful views of the surrounding countryside that early settlers enjoyed from its elevated town site.

Growth accelerated when Grandview became connected to railroad lines in the early 20th century. The city emerged as an important rail hub for transporting agricultural goods from outlying farms to big-city markets. Population swelled to over 1,000 by 1920.

During the Great Depression and World War II era, Grandview provided a home for many military veteran families. In particular, it hosted servicemen and women stationed at the nearby Richards-Gebaur Air Force Base, which operated from 1941 until its closure in 1994. Grandview High School’s mascot, the Bulldog, is a nod to the base’s military aviation history.

Home To “The People’s President”

Notable hometown hero Harry S. Truman, known as “The People’s President,” worked on his family’s farm in Grandview as a young man before going on to become the 33rd U.S. President.

The Truman Farm Home is open for tours as a National Historic Site.
