Overland Park, Kansas: the polished suburb that still drives east for a fade

Overland Park is the second-largest city in Kansas and the shine of the metro's Kansas side — good schools, corporate campuses, parks, gardens, and more shopping and dining than most people could work through in a year. So it says something that a handful of its residents make a reverse commute: they leave all of that and drive twenty minutes east, across the state line, into Grandview, Missouri, for a haircut.

What Overland Park is

If you live here, you already know the pitch, because you're living inside it. Overland Park grew from a Johnson County bedroom community into a full-sized city with its own downtown, its own employers, and a reputation for getting the boring things right — schools, roads, safety, public services. Families move here for exactly that.

The amenities match the address. There are large corporate employers and the daytime population that comes with them, well-kept parks and public gardens, a children's farmstead, and shopping and dining that range from the everyday to the destination. You do not have to leave Overland Park to find a good meal, a good gym, or a good anything. That's the whole point of the place.

The reverse commute

The usual metro story runs the other way: people drive from the Missouri suburbs into Johnson County for the shopping and the jobs. But barbering doesn't follow zip-code prestige. It follows the chair.

So some Overland Park residents do the opposite. They point the car east, cross into Missouri, and drive about twenty minutes to The Stache in Grandview for a fade — unhurried, detail-first barbering where the last five minutes of a cut get the same attention as the first. None of that is a knock on Overland Park's own barbers — there are plenty of good ones. It's just that a fade you trust is worth a short highway drive, and for a few people, that drive happens to run east.
